I'm concerned about internet fraud and want to know more about online consumer protections. We want you to feel secure about ordering online through www.metroshops.net. There are a number of consumer protection web sites that have been put into place by various organizations. We invite you to review the info available by following the links below:
Companies selling online are governed by the same sales tax collection requirements as any other retailer. Remote sellers (including Internet retailers or catalog sales companies) are generally required to collect taxes in the states where they have a physical selling presence. If they do not have any such presence, they are not required to collect sales taxes.
The Internet Tax Freedom Act (ITFA) has been renewed through October 31, 2007.
The ITFA was primarily intended to prevent state and local governments from imposing new or discriminatory taxes on Internet transactions and on Internet access. Despite the name of the Act, ITFA does not preclude state and local governments from imposing existing sales tax collection requirements on companies selling over the Internet.
An example of when sales taxes would be imposed would be if you were purchasing from a retailer with a Michigan presence and the items you ordered were being shipped to Michigan. State sales tax would be charged on your purchase.
To learn more about collection of sales taxes by a particular merchant, please visit that sellers web site and order information guidelines. (top)
The federal Mail-Order Rule, also known as the 30-Day Rule requires businesses that advertise mail or telephone-order merchandise to have a reasonable basis for stating or implying that they can ship within a certain time. Even if no shipment time is stated, the law requires Merchants to have a reasonable basis for believing that they can ship within 30 days (thus, the nickname). If a business discovers it cannot ship on time, it must seek your consent to delay shipment. If it is unable to obtain that consent, the Merchant must, without any request from you, promptly refund all the money you paid. (top)
What is the Fair Credit Billing Act and how does it affect me?
Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, your bank cannot hold you liable for more than $50 of fraudulent charges. Should any unauthorized use of your credit card take place, through no fault of your own, as the result of purchases made at any Metro Shops site and your bank holds you liable for any of this $50, www.metroshops.net will reimburse you the $50.00.
Fair Credit Billing Act
If you're charged for something you didn't order, you must notify your credit card provider in writing in accordance with its reporting rules and procedures and the federal Fair Credit Billing Act. Under the act, if you find such a mistake on your bill, you must send a written letter to the creditor within 60 days after the first bill containing the error was mailed to you. Consumer advocates recommend you send the letter by certified mailing with a return receipt request, so you have proof of the mailing date. The Better Business Bureau recommends that you include:
- A copy of your credit card statement showing your name and credit card number and unauthorized charge in dispute
- A statement explaining the billing error and the dollar amount involved
Your card issuer must respond to your letter within 30 days after it is received unless the problem is resolved within that period. While a bill is being disputed, the creditor may not threaten to damage your credit rating or report you as delinquent to anyone. In addition, most banks cover all the charges that result from unauthorized use of your credit card or limit your liability to the $50 required by federal law. (top)
